Mahatma Gandhi was a leader of a civil disobedience movement aimed against British rule in India. He had a vision of an independent India based on religious pluralism. Although he was a humble human, he was ferociously intimidating to Great Britain and was ultimately successful in chasing the colonists from his homeland by walking slowly to the sea.
Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence.
